I was listening to TV today (while doing dishes in the kitchen) and I heard an ad for an upcoming movie (didn't catch the title) but the main theme was how everyone is looking for a miracle at Christmas... I reflected on the truth of this as I thought about the themes of our traditional Christmas flicks: A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34 Street, The Bishop's Wife, It's a Wonderful Life...even the cartoon flicks like Frosty the Snowman, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas... They all have, as an integral part of the plot, the miraculous intervention of God (although not necessarily presented as it being Him) in the lives of humans. Everything is bleak until Heaven intervenes and then, by some miracle, all is fixed and everyone lives happily ever after. I know this theme can be heard throughout the year as well, but do you notice how, every Christmas, we have to either re-watch these traditional oldies or view a new flick that portrays the same idea? It's a "feel-good" pastime that comes with the season, bringing us "peace" and making us think that, perhaps, there is a God out there who cares and is willing to reach out of His Heaven and save the day...
The truth of the matter is that the great Miracle happened over 2000 years ago when God did send us the ultimate Christmas gift in the form of His Son, Jesus. This was the intervention that we were, are, and will always be looking for. This gift is the one that we attempt to imitate but nothing that we can ever do or give can compare with this sacrifice. The Christmas movies are based on a solid truth that most of the world doesn't even know about - God loves us, cares about us and gave His life for us to prove it. His highest desire is to have a relationship with us and that, in itself, can be the only gift worth having...
